Every austral winter, one of the world's largest and understudied populations of humpback whales begin their annual migration from the Antarctic feeding grounds back to their place of birth: the warm waters of the Madagascar tropics. 

Here, some of the humpback's most mysterious and beautiful behaviors are on full display as males compete furiously for the attention of females, and new mothers give birth and prepare their young for the long journey back south...
